Los Angeles, CA July 11th 2014 – An article released today by AZ Central confirms that Theranos, the Silicon Valley clinical lab testing company, has leased a 20,000-square-foot location at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. With the Phoenix metropolitan area acting as its early beta market, this development comes as no surprise in light of the company’s recent push to expand its presence in the region. Since my own experience as a Theranos patient in Scottsdale just last month, Theranos has quickly established an additional 5 Wellness Centers at various Walgreens throughout the Valley. These new patient service centers come in addition to the 20 pre-existing locations established since November 2013.As DeciBio has highlighted in recent market coverage and media commentary, Theranos will need to establish a laboratory infrastructure in order to support the logistical burdens of fielding patient samples in an efficient and timely manner. The company’s current automated desktop analyzers are classified as laboratory developed tests (as opposed to in vitro diagnostics), leading Theranos’ lab operations to be confined within their own facilities. If the company does intend to establish a CLIA lab in the Valley, as potentially indicated by their hiring of clinical lab positions in Phoenix, this could mean significant growth for Theranos testing in Arizona. Otherwise, the company could simply be using this space as a logistical center for its growing operations or the eventual goal of distributing its analyzers, if FDA approved and CLIA-waived. Either way, the new 20,000-square-foot flagship location should be sufficient to house the compact analyzers and clinical assays manufactured by Theranos for the time being.Theranos has built a reputation for keeping its operations highly protected, however this new development comes in the wake of a recent wave of media interviews granted by the Founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes. With the company’s mission to provide better access to health information, the AZ hub could be a model for the much larger intention of a national expansion.
